    Memristive excitable cellular automata

    The memristor is a device whose resistance changes depending on the polarity and magnitude of a voltage applied to the device's terminals. We design a minimalistic model of a regular network of memristors using structurally-dynamic cellular automata. Each cell gets info about states of its closest neighbours via incoming links. A link can be one 'conductive' or 'non-conductive' states. States of every link are updated depending on states of cells the link connects. Every cell of a memristive automaton takes three states: resting, excited (analog of positive polarity) and refractory (analog of negative polarity). A cell updates its state depending on states of its closest neighbours which are connected to the cell via 'conductive' links. We study behaviour of memristive automata in response to point-wise and spatially extended perturbations, structure of localised excitations coupled with topological defects, interfacial mobile excitations and growth of information pathways.Comment: Accepted to Int J Bifurcation and Chaos (2011

    Visual Perceptual Difficulties and Under-Achievement at School in a Large Community-Based Sample of Children

    Difficulties with visual perception (VP) are often described in children with neurological or developmental problems. However, there are few data regarding the range of visual perceptual abilities in populations of normal children, or on the impact of these abilities on children's day-to-day functioning. Methods Data were obtained for 4512 participants in an ongoing birth cohort study (Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children; ALSPAC). The children's mothers responded to questions designed to elicit indications of visual perceptual difficulties or immaturity, when their children were aged 13 years. We examined associations with standardised school test results in reading and in mathematics at age 1314 years (SATS-KS3), accounting for potential confounders including IQ. Results Three underlying factors explained half the variance in the VP question responses. These correlated best with questions on interpreting cluttered scenes; guidance of movement and face recognition. The adjusted parameter estimates (95% CI) for the cluttered-scenes factor (0.05; 0.02 to 0.08; p<0.001) suggested positive associations with the reading test results whilst that for the guidance-of-movement factor (0.03; 0.00 to 0.06; p = 0.026) suggested positive association with the mathematics results. The raw scores were associated with both test results. Discussion VP abilities were widely distributed in this sample of 13-year old children. Lower levels of VP function were associated with under-achievement in reading and in mathematics. Simple interventions can help children with VP difficulties, so research is needed into practicable, cost-effective strategies for identification and assessment, so that support can be targeted appropriately

    Sustained lower incidence of thyroid cancer in West Cumbria, UK

    Background: In recent years, incidences of thyroid cancer have increased in developed countries; one of the known risk factors for thyroid cancer is exposure to radioiodine. Previous research by Bowlt and Tiplady [5] has shown an inverse link between radioactive iodine levels contained in thyroid tissue of deceased inhabitants and the distance they lived from the Sellafield nuclear facility in Cumbria, UK. Objectives: The present study aimed to determine what thyroid cancer incidences were in the regional localities in Cumbria for the last decade. Methods: An ethics-approved retrospective cohort study in which age-standardised incidence of thyroid cancer per 100,000 population was compared between localities within Cumbria and with UK average figures. Conclusions: The present study shows that the apparent lower incidence of thyroid cancer in West Cumbria has persisted, although due to the limited number of thyroid cancers diagnosed, a statistically significant difference was not observed. Further research ā€“ potentially involving populations living near sources of radioiodine emission - is indicated to investigate if there are any mechanisms that underlie this apparent trend

    A framework for innovation outsourcing

    This paper proposes a framework for the facilitation of organisational capability for outsourcing innovation, enabling firms to take advantage of its many benefits, (e.g., reduced costs, increased ļ¬‚exibility, access to better expertise and increased business focus), whilst mitigating its risks. In this framework a generic holistic model is developed to aid firms to successfully outsource innovation. The model is realised in two stages using a qualitative theory-building research design. The initial stage develops a preliminary model which is subsequently validated and refined during the second stage. The propositions which form the preliminary model are deductively explored to identify whether they also exist in a second data set. A semi-structured interview survey is executed with the aid of a rich picture survey instrument to gather data for this purpose. The model developed by this study describes innovation outsourcing as an open system of interrelated activities that takes established company strategy, (in terms of people, organisational structures, environment, and technology), and transforms it into improved firm performance through innovation. The model achieves this through a three-stage process which enables the alignment of capability to outsourced innovation activity, and makes actual performance outcomes, rather than expected benefits, the focus of innovation outsourcing aims

    Tube-side mass transfer for hollow fibre membrane contactors operated in the low Graetz range

    Transformation of the tube-side mass transfer coeļ¬ƒcient derived in hollow ļ¬bre membrane contactors (HFMC) of diļ¬€erent characteristic length scales (equivalent diameter and ļ¬bre length) has been studied when operated in the low Graetz range (Gz < 10). Within the low Gz range, mass transfer is generally described by the Graetz problem (Sh=3.67) which assumes that the concentration proļ¬le comprises a constant shape over the ļ¬bre radius. In this study, it is experimentally evidenced that this assumption over predicts mass transfer within the low Graetz range. Furthermore, within the low Gz range (below 2), a proportional relationship between the experimentally determined mass transfer coeļ¬ƒcient (Kov) and the Graetz number has been identiļ¬ed. For Gz numbers below 2, the experimental Sh number approached unity, which suggests that mass transfer is strongly dependent upon diļ¬€usion. However, within this diļ¬€usion controlled region of mass transfer, tube-side ļ¬‚uid velocity remained important. For Gz numbers above 2, Sh could be satisfactorily described by extension to the LĆ©vĆŖque solution, which can be ascribed to the constrained growth of the concentration boundary layer adjacent to the ļ¬bre wall. Importantly this study demonstrates that whilst mass transfer in the low Graetz range does not explicitly conform to either the Graetz problem or classical LĆ©vĆŖque solution, it is possible to transform the experimentally derived overall mass transfer coeļ¬ƒcient (Kov) between characteristic length scales (dh and L). This was corroborated by comparison of the empirical relationship determined in this study (Sh=0.36Gz) with previously published studies operated in the low Gz range. This analysis provides important insight for process design when slow tube-side ļ¬‚ows, or low Schmidt numbers (coincident with gases) constrain operation of hollow ļ¬bre membrane contactors to the low Gz range

    Measurement of Nuclear Magnetic Dipole Moment of Li-8 by Implantation in Metal Foils

    Polarized 8Li nuclei have been produced through the 7Li(d,p) reaction using the 3.5-MeV Van de Graaff accelerator at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The observed polarization was a slowly-varying function of deuteron energy over the range 1.3-2.9 MeV, reaching a maximum of about +1.6%. The recoiling nuclei were stopped in Au, Pt and Pd foils and the effective dipole moments were measured by a resonant depolarization method. The results were 1.65362(22)ĀµN, 1.65288(20)ĀµN and 1.65270(30)ĀµN respectively. These are consistent with the work of Connor, who found Āµ(8Li) =1.6530(8)ĀµN in a LiF crystal. An upper limit for the 8Li quadrupole moment will also be discussed
